Biography

Grethe Ingmann and Jørgen Ingmann were Danish singers and musicians. The couple married in 1956 and performed as the duet Grethe og Jørgen Ingmann, untill they divorced in 1975. They won the Eurovision Song Contest 1963, representing Denmark.

Grethe (born 17-6-1938) started her career at 17, when she temporarily performed as a singer of the Malihini Hawaiians pop quartet. Soon after she sang with the Danish guitarist Jørn Grauengaard and his trio. In 1955 she met her future husband, guitarist Jørgen Ingmann.
Grethe Ingman died of cancer on August 18, 1990, aged 52.

Jørgen Ingmann (born 26-4-1925) first performed as a guitarist with Svend Asmussen, the jazz violinist, during the 1940s and early 1950s. In the mid-1950s he set up his own studio where he developed techniques of multi-tracking and distortion, using his own accompaniment on bass and drums, and began recording under the name “Jørgen Ingmann & His Guitar”. His best jazz work is to be found on the LP “Guitar in Hifi”  which, apart from “Margie”, the first track, has many songs written by Hoagy Carmichael. It was issued in England on a 10-inch LP and in other places as a 12-inch LP. In the USA it was called “Jorgan Ingmann Swings”
Jørgen Ingmann died on  March 21, 2015, aged 89
